Introduction

Like in the real world, there is a constant stream of people going from one part of the city to another for work, especially in what’s considered its economic heart: downtown. Though skyscrapers may not exist yet, there are plenty of buildings suited for different-sized businesses. Each one contains a number of what’s known simply as the occupation of the fantasy businessman.

Mirroring its real brethren, the businessman has a full schedule, beginning early in the day and ending late at night. This occupation isn’t strictly related to one particular type of career; it encompasses those found in the commerce, the financial, and many other industries. These sectors experience changes everyday, meaning they need people who can handle them deftly when they come.

To succeed in his career, the fantasy businessman must possess several qualities. Though he is always looking to the next deal, he structures his life around work, dedicating untold hours to bettering himself. He continually strives to be the best in his field, improving the qualities he needs in order to be successful.

The place the businessman works requires he devote his utmost attention to it. No matter where he works, he puts the company’s interests ahead of himself, for he knows that the more money it makes, the more that will go into his pocket, especially if he helped make it happen. This applies to the various companies he can work in.

When it comes to the world, the fantasy businessman plays a key role. His hardworking ethic helps steer the company to greater heights, leading to it becoming a powerful player in the community it’s located in. His efforts also help shepherd innovations that will revolutionize the world, changing it for the better or worse.

This is the fifteenth article in the series going over the different kinds of fantasy occupations. For more, take a gander at our blog page where we have a plethora of articles waiting for you!

Typical Qualities of the Fantasy Businessman

So how can a businessman possibly become the best he can be? Just as in the real world, he must have the right qualities to make it work. For those he lacks, he has no choice but to work on them if he wants to be successful in his career.

The first one and perhaps the most important is that of ambition. A fantasy businessman doesn’t simply sit on his laurels and call it a day. Rather, he pushes on, eager to reach the next level, seeking to one day run a powerful company capable of impacting the world in a meaningful way. You could say he wants to leave his mark on history.

Being ruthless is another quality a businessman needs. He doesn’t have competitors just from within work, he has those from rival companies. He has to use tactics that help give him an edge so he can net a win. Popular ones include taking a client out for a meal or socializing with him to curry favor with him. Of course, there are those that have no qualms about resorting to underhanded tactics in order to win.

The third quality a fantasy businessman has to have is to be gregarious. Socialization is a huge component of working in the business world as he interacts with many different people to create his own personal network. If he prefers to be alone, he has to shed that if he wishes to be in this world.

Having a stellar hardworking ethic will take the businessman far in his field. He strives for perfection in every aspect of his work life and he pushes himself to never slack off. He outworks his competitors, lands more clients, turn his reports in earlier than they do, goes in to work earlier and leaves later.

The Company and the Fantasy Businessman

What type of companies are ideal for the typical businessman? Keep in mind that what’s out there is heavily determined by what period of history the world is in. Companies in futuristic societies are automated and have robot workers whereas those in the medieval era use labor in all aspects. Be sure to have the right ones for your world!

Regardless of the era, there are some industries that remain constant, though the technology they use evolve over time. One such is that of manufacturing. These companies take raw goods and convert them into sellable finished products or those that will be consumed in the creation of others. They need agents who will help them sell their wares or work on refining the production process to make more goods in a shorter span of time.

Another sector where you’re likely to see a fantasy businessman is that of finance. This sector features a massive number of companies that specialize in one field or another and they use businessmen to land clients and crunch the numbers. Many of the best ones work for the high-powered leaders in the field, hoping that one day they’ll be sitting at the helm.

Transportation is another popular kind where a businessman works in. There will always be products that need to move from one location to another, no matter if the world is set in ancient or modern times. The businessman negotiates contracts between his employer and a company that wants his firm’s services and works overtime to ensure that his client’s products reach their destination in the specified time.

Energy is used in so many fields that it is impossible to have a functioning society without it. Oil, solar, wind, and all other energy-production companies need people to represent them for a number of reasons. A fantasy businessman employed by one of them will make deals with individuals, municipalities, even national governments that enable his firm to deliver the power to them when needed. He also looks at how advancements in technology will impact it and works to integrate them to maximize the company’s profits. If he can improve them, he’ll get a nice bonus!

Why the Fantasy Businessman Matters to the World

Over time, a small company may grow by leaps and bounds, gradually amassing more power and influence as it gets ever larger. New divisions are created within it, leading to more and more workers. It’ll need capable people who have the smarts to promote it to prospective clients as well as maintaining those it already has and that’s where the fantasy businessman comes in.

At nearly all stages of development, a firm needs sales plus other sources of income to gather the money it needs to finance expansion. By working for it, the businessman helps it reach potential customers both within the community and in other areas, thereby increasing its reach.

Fantasy cities are important in the genre. This image depicts a city with a castle on a hilltop above it. The city has both rectangular- and square-shaped buildings with a wavy roof on each one. The buildings come in four colors: light yellow, brown, light blue, and white. The roofs come in the following colors: dark blue, red, light black, and dark brown. Many of these buildings have windows and some have a visible door. The road itself runs down the middle of the image, swaying to the right and then the left, ending at the doorstep of the castle. The road also meets two others, one that runs to the left, and the other to the right. Behind the city is a grassy field with blades of grass scattered throughout. A river cuts through the field, meandering from the left edge to the right edge of the image. The castle itself is white with gray shadows. It has four red turrets and diamond-shaped windows. The sky above is a bright blue with two white clouds. Some birds are flying on the left side, above the castle, and the right side. It also features a fantasy marketplace.

The fantasy businessman’s goal is to woo prospective clients and he does it in many different ways. He does so in order to gain more clout within the business so that he can be the go-to guy when it’s seeking more customers. The more he can land, the more money he makes for his bosses which makes it more likely he’ll get a nice, fat bonus as a reward for his deeds.

The most powerful corporations in a fantasy world have many subsidiary companies within their umbrellas. They have many different products and they use some of the money they make from their employees making all these sales in researching and developing new technologies. These technologies will eventually change how things are done in the world and it wouldn’t be possible without all the work their businessmen did by bringing in all the customers they have.

As he helps his employer grow by attracting customers, it becomes able to hire more workers from within the community. Its new workers have money to spend in nearby shops, boosting their revenue and helping keep them afloat. The higher he moves up the corporate ladder, the more resources he has at his disposal to help the community, increasing the odds it’ll throw its support behind the firm he works in when it’s needed.

Tying it all Together

A fantasy businessman eats and sleeps work. He enters the office, ready to do what he has to do that day, whether it’s schmoozing with a potential customer or ensuring that a delivery reached its destination with no trouble. He continually troubleshoots all day, moving to quell fires that have the potential to destroy everything he’s worked so hard for.

Being a businessman isn’t for everyone. The best ones are ambitious, ever shooting for the stars and leaving nothing to chance. They also must demonstrate some ruthlessness, especially when they’re engaged in an intense competition with their rivals to land a client that can bring a lot of business their way.

There are some companies that are more likely to have businessmen working for them. Prestigious institutions like finance and banking feature them heavily since they deal with a myriad of issues that can affect the public in several ways. They also have the power to negotiate deals on behalf of their bosses and work to get as many benefits for their company as they can.

The world benefits from the businessman in that the money he makes for his place of employment in several ways. One way is that the money it receives gives it the ability to expand, hiring more workers which in turn boosts the economy of the local community. That means more businesses are able to keep their doors open.

The fantasy businessman brings something to the table that many other occupations don’t. Bringing this type of career into your world adds a realistic flavor to it, making it feel vibrant and dynamic and your audience will thank you for it!
