One aspect of fantasy that people can’t get enough of is magic. There’s something about it that just thrills people and nowhere is this more evident than wizard huts. People love seeing what they look like and the objects they discover inside and learning about their magical properties.
Wizard huts are a staple in the genre and their chief purpose is to serve as the primary residence of those capable of magic. They’re found pretty much just anywhere from the heart of cities to way out in the countryside, far from prying eyes. How they look is a reflection of who lives there.
These homes come in all shapes and sizes, from small, simple one-room places to sprawling castles. The Harry Potter series showcases different ones like the Weasleys’ residence, the Burrows, and Hagrid’s hut and the castle of Hogwarts as well. While many are built using conventional materials, many also incorporate magic to illustrate that they are magical buildings.
Wizard huts feature a wide ranging number of objects. Not all have magical properties and are just simple objects though the majority do. Touching one or holding one the wrong way can lead to unfortunate accidents so it’s best to handle them with care.
These buildings play a significant role in the world since the people who reside within them have magical powers. In many stories, they are a major setting where events that dramatically affect the plot occur that impact the world at large. These events can shape the world for the better or the worse.
This is number twenty-four in the fantasy buildings series. If you like this article and are interested in seeing what else we have, our blog page has more for you to read!
Huts in fantasy largely mimic their real-world counterparts. They are tiny, having only enough space for one person or a small family. One noteworthy difference between the two is that the former can serve as the home of wizards and witches and this can drastically affect how they look.
The basic hut uses materials like wood, bricks for its four walls and straw or shingles for the roof. When it comes to wizards, you can use different combinations of materials like stone or marble, for they’ll reflect their owner’s taste. Fancy, extravagant wizards prefer expensive materials like stone whereas poor or humble ones go with more common materials like wood.
The exterior of wizard huts tend to have triangular roofs and square walls though they can vary in size. For those with multiple rooms, the roof’s triangular size can be stretched out to accommodate them or become flat instead. The drawback to having a flat roof is that whenever it rains or snows, that water or snow will just sit there and can potentially rip the roof open.
You don’t have to use square walls for the exterior, you can opt for circular ones. This makes the interior feel more homely. The coziness is a boon for those who aren’t living alone. If you like, you can go with a wild design like a rhombus or hexagon. It’s your world, after all!
Not surprisingly, due to their diminutive size, wizard huts have few, if any, windows at all. You’ll often see just one or two, usually on opposite walls. This enables the sunlight to come in, bringing a warmth to the inside. A hut with no windows makes for a dark and gloomy place which some wizards many prefer.
Chimneys are a popular feature of wizard huts. With how tiny the huts are, the chimneys tend to be smaller than those found in normal-sized homes though you see smoke billowing forth due to their owners using the fireplace for cooking or magical experiments.
Moving into the inside, wizard huts teem with all sorts of objects. Some are outright dangerous whereas others won’t hurt you at all. Nevertheless of their danger level, they are a source of fascination for your audience and it’s up to you to present them in a way that draws their interest.
One object you will definitely see is either the wizard’s wand or staff. Some worlds use one or the other and they’re usually on a spot that’s easy for their owner to access like a countertop or table. The staff or wind helps him protect himself from intruders or he uses it to help cook or clean the hut.
Another staple object you’ll come across is the cauldron. It’s used in making potions or other home remedies should the wizard be feeling a bit under the weather. The cauldron is either in the fireplace or it sits adjacent to it, waiting to be used. If not cleaned regularly, the cauldron can pose a threat to the owner since residual elements from previous uses stick to its walls and when mixed in with the new concoction, they can lead to trouble.
Spellbooks are another thing you’ll find in huts. They cover many different subjects like levitation or contain recipes to brew potions. Some even delve deeply into the dark arts whereas others focus on the practical aspects of magic like summoning objects or incorporating it into everyday life.
Crystal balls or glowing magical orbs appear in many wizard huts. They enable the user to glimpse a potential future or explore someone’s past or find the location or someone or something. However, these orbs aren’t necessarily 100% accurate so wizards who use them have to exercise a degree of caution.
Wizard artifacts like rings also appear in huts. These priceless objects infuse their owner with mystical power. The power they infuse depends on the wizard and range from enchanting their skill in necromancy to the ability to turn invisible in a shorter time while using less energy. You can get quite creative with the powers these artifacts have!
Considering wizards play a great role in fantasy, many of their huts also do the same for the worlds they’re in. While they are a major setting in many of the stories they appear in, how they impact the world is largely dictated by how wizards are viewed in said world.
For example, wizards who are feared due to their power tend to lead reclusive lives, often monitoring events from afar in the safety of their huts which are found far away from civilization. They continually work against the forces of evil with only people they trust, doing so despite knowing that the majority of the people view them with fear. The huts are the center of their efforts as they use the orbs to see what their enemies are doing, send and receive messages, and so on.
For the worlds where wizards don’t have to go into hiding, the huts they live in remain the site of their efforts to thwart their enemies’ plans though that isn’t their only purpose. They’re also used as a meeting-place where their friends come over to spend time much like Hagrid’s hut in the Harry Potter series. The warm, convivial appearance of huts makes it easy for pleasant conversations to take place which strengthens the bonds of friendship between the wizards and his friends.
In some cases, wizards assume the role of the guardian of the world. Wizard huts in many worlds are where their owner monitors the world from afar in their quiet solitude. Some have forged friendships with animals like birds and squirrels who come to them, bearing news. They work assiduously in their huts, putting together the disparate tidbits of information they receive to identify the trends, especially during a time where the world is growing darker to determine whether the forces of evil are mustering their strength to strike.
As their personal domain, wizard huts are also where wizards mediate and communicate with the spirits of the world, seeking their counsel and guidance on matters they are having difficulties solving. The spirits provide words of wisdom and give them cryptic advice that necessities them leaving their huts in order for them find the solution they’re looking for.
Wizard huts are fascinating buildings. While a great number of them are small, large enough to hold only one person, there are some that can accommodate a small family. They have a charming quality to them that just makes people want to explore their every nook and crevice though they have to tread with caution, especially around magical objects.
A lot of huts are built using conventional materials like straw and wood due to how readily available they are as well as how cheap they are to buy. However, that shouldn’t dissuade you from coming up with using your own. You can use stone, bricks, or any other one to help them stand out!
The inside contains scads of magical objects. From cauldrons to spellbooks, you’d be hard-pressed to not find any brimming with magical power somewhere in huts. You still need to be careful for mishandling one can lead to an accident or mishap.
Wizard huts serve as the primary residence for magical practitioners though they’re much more than that. The majority of huts are where wizards continually keep an eye on the state of world, watching ever for signs of evil creeping back into it. Most of the people of the world will never know how much time and energy wizards expend in working to keep the forces of darkness in check from their huts.
