A fictional civilization doesn’t exist simply due to its people. It exists by what they do and how they impact the world around them. One way people do so is telling stories in a written format. These people are known as fantasy authors and they bring a lot to the table and what they do leaves a lasting impression long after they’ve departed the world.
Authors in fantasy refer to people within a world who’s chosen to write for a living. They could be columnists for newspapers, novelists, poets, and so on. People in this craft have a passion for the written word and want to share it with the world.
Just like in the real world, becoming a writer isn’t easy. There are several requisite qualities needed for people contemplating whether to become fantasy authors or not and having them goes a long way in making it easier for them to leap in with both feet. Qualities like patience are key to success!
Becoming a top-tier author means that people have to spend countless hours doing research. Researching the topic of what they’re writing, whether it’s a book or article, gives them the knowledge they need to put together something worthwhile to read. Readers can easily spot the difference between someone who’s put in the work and someone who just threw together some words and made it sound professional.
Fantasy authors are unique to the world in that they help broaden their readers’ knowledge of the world. They tell stories about heroes bravely facing off against monsters, informing their readers about the latest going-ons in the community, and so on. Their readers learn new ideas as well as discover the magic of faraway places that they’d like to visit someday!

No matter where it is technologically, an imaginary world needs people to tell stories and inform others about what’s going on. That’s where fantasy authors come in. But not just anyone will suffice. Rather, they need to have certain qualities that will take them far in the field and become bona-fide stars!
Not all qualities are equal; some are more important than others. One of the top all aspiring authors need is that of patience. Writing is not something to be done quickly; it needs to be done right, meaning that the best writers will spend hours creating something and fine-tuning it to make it the best it can be!
Another quality is the ability to accept constructive criticism. Not everyone can do so and if used correctly, it can help someone become better at their craft. There will always be room for improvement, even for those at the top of the profession. The best ones listen to what others have to say and make the fixes on what they’re working on to make it better.
The third one is to have a stellar imagination. This is especially important for those who want to write stories about the protagonist going on an adventure in a fictional land. They have to come up with interesting character names, places, beasts, and etc. The goal is to transport their readers to the world of make-believe where they cheer the hero as he triumphs over the villain.
One such quality fantasy authors need is to be charismatic. They have to interact with all kinds of people and they win them over by socializing with them in a number of ways. Networking helps them develop and maintain relationships, both with people in the industry and their readers, which helps them sell whatever they’re writing.
The road to the top for authors requires one little detail that many would-be aspirants overlook: research. Many readers have a discerning eye and value quality over quantity; that is, they can easily sniff out an amateur who only put in the bare minimum to write something that sounds professional over one who dedicated countless hours learning about the topic. The former is more likely to have their works be ignored going forward than the latter.
One way fantasy authors do research is by visiting exotic places, that is if they can afford it. They study them by documenting what they look like, its climate, its plants, and wildlife. They want to portray them in a realistic way that makes their audience feel as if they were really there.
Another method authors use is to conduct interviews, especially for an article or novel. They talk with experts and write down what they say and compile the information they get in an easily readable format. They use it to help them write and the interviews also helps them cultivate relationships with different people that they can use again down the road.
For those who are simply interested in storytelling, having a fantastic imagination isn’t enough. Sure, it goes a long way but it isn’t everything. Research helps them develop their imagination since they can fine-tune the details they use in describing places, animals, people, and so on. They research by looking at the popular media of the day like other novels or paintings, etc.
A popular way fantasy authors research is by simply exploring places close to where they live. They go to parks where they look at people, animals, trees, and etc or eateries to study the various foods. They also talk with them, asking them questions, to gain an idea on how they perceive the world. They can use the conversations they have with people to showcase what they think of how things in the world are going at the moment or for inspiration to create characters for their stories.
The majority of people who live in the world don’t travel all too often, rather they like to stay close to home. It could be because of work, close relatives, or a general apathy to what’s going on beyond the area they’re in. This is where authors come in by writing books, articles, and so on.
The written language of a civilization binds its people together and is important for its survival since future generations will use the knowledge they have to keep it going and build upon its foundations. Authors play a large role in making that happen no matter what they write.
The things fantasy authors write help spread written knowledge around the world, whether that be a war breaking out far away or scandals rocking the capital. Reading them increases people’s knowledge and enables them to keep track of what’s going on because sooner or later, it just might affect them personally one way or another.
Authors are also known for their ability to tell stories in a captivating way. The range of stories they can tell go from gossip to satire to heroic epics. Their readers lap up every word and eagerly await their next novel or article. This fosters a burgeoning relationship between the readers and the authors which is made more clear when they come face-to-face.
One noteworthy part of fantasy authors is that for those who have the means and money to travel, they can regale their readers with their experiences. They can write stories or articles about the places they’ve been to, their local cuisine, the locals they’ve met and the products they sell. This makes them feel like they’re seeing it through their eyes and also has the potential for them to travel there one day should they wish to.
The occupation of fantasy authors is one only those skilled with the power of words can shoot for. It is an admirable profession, considering it lets people compose riveting, compelling tales that stand the test of time. People in this field also come up with articles that inform their readers about topics like sports or the local news.
To become an author, there are some qualities that those contemplating whether to go for it or not ought to have before they proceed. Patience and having thick skin are two of them and are perhaps the most important, for writing is one of these careers where it is better to be slow and methodical rather than rushing it and making something of shoddy quality.
Research is one crucial element all fantasy authors must endeavor to undertake should they desire to strive for the top. Learning as much information as they can helps them understand the topic they’re writing about better and they come off more credible for their readers. People can easily sniff out someone who just threw a bunch of words on the page to sound like the real thing and like those who took the time to write something interesting after spending hours conducting research.
The world benefits from authors in that they communicate knowledge to their audience. If they’re writing an article about an exotic land or the latest entry in a long-running series, their readers learn something they didn’t know before and spurs their interest in learning more. The magic power of the word transports them to a place that only exists in their imagination.
Uncertain whether to bring the occupation of fantasy authors into your world? Their ability to enchant their readers about the world they live in mirrors that of the real world, thereby adding a sense of realism into a fictional world. This makes it easier for your audience to immerse themselves into the world you’ve built. You can’t go wrong with having this occupation into yours!
